7 TV Shows That Are Too Bizarre For Words

Today's post has been a blast, to be honest.

I have compiled a list of the strangest shows (both reality and otherwise) from around the globe and the results are both concerning and hilarious.

If you would like to hold onto any faith in humanity, this post may not be for you.

Naked Jungle (UK, 2000)

What is it?It was a one-off TV gameshow hosted by Keith Chegwin (how did he ever recover from this?) in which contestants completed an assault course fully nude. It was based on children's show Jungle Run, which makes it even more disturbing. The prize was £5,000 and one male and female made it to the final, collecting fig leaves along the way much like the bananas in Jungle Run. Cheggers himself was also nude. Unsurprisingly, he has described this show as his 'worst career move'. There's a few clips kicking about on Youtube, if you fancy a laugh.

Highlights:There is a clip in which a (naked) contestant introduces herself with her name and age, only for the host to look her up and down and say 'she looks so good for 44!'. In the titles, Keith Chegwin also jumps butt naked into the air to music (whilst wearing the above hat).

Fun Facts:

At the time, the show set the record for the most viewers (2 million) for Channel 5. The ITC (Independent Television Committee) reported that they only received one complaint about Naked Jungle. The complaint was that a viewer said that he could "do without Keith Chegwin prancing around".

My Mother, The Car (USA, 1965)

What is it?

My Mother, The Car aired for one season (30 episodes) in the mid 1960s and the premise is hilarious. The plot is as follows: Attorney David's deceased Mother is reincarnated as a car and talks to him through the radio. Yep, you heard it right. There are also some brilliant episode titles such as 'Lights Camera Mother', 'When You Wish Upon A Car' and 'Come Honk Your Horn'.

Highlights: There is an episode in which David's 'Mother' gets drunk on Antifreeze. I genuinely really want to see that.

Fun Facts: The theme song was used in an episode of the show Arrested Development (also entitled 'My Mother, The Car'). You can also watch the show on Hulu.

Heil Honey, I'm Home (UK, 1990)

What is it?

I'm completely baffled by this one. Okay, this was a UK sitcom spoof and the plot is that fictionalised versions of Hitler and Eva Braun live next to a Jewish couple, Rosa and Arny Goldenstein. Seriously? The show was based around Hitler's inability to 'get along with his neighbours'. Eleven episodes were filmed but luckily, only one aired. Apparently, in the unaired episodes, the character of Stalin was introduced and Hitler and Eva plotted to kill their neighbours.

Highlights: It's cancellation, for me. Who pitched this at the meeting?!

Fun Facts:The show was described as 'perhaps the world's most tasteless situation comedy'. Creator Geoff Atkinson argued that it perhaps didn't translate as well as he'd hoped and that three quarters of the cast were Jewish and did not find the plot controversial whatsoever. Wow.

I Wanna Marry Harry (USA, 2014)

What is it?

I Wanna Marry Harry was an American reality TV show in which 12 women competed for the love of Prince Harry. Unbelievable plot twist: it's obviously not him, it's a lookalike. The show was cancelled after 4 episodes (although the last 4 were also released later).

Highlights: For me, the whole concept is a highlight. This list is forcing me to say 'who came up with this?!' far too many times. Apparently, the contestants weren't explicitly told that this was Prince Harry at first and were pitched a dating show - but were told a few episodes in that this was supposedly the Prince.

Fun Facts:The Harry lookalike had no previous acting experience, dyed his hair red for the part and had to brush up on his Royal knowledge. Also, the winner and the lookalike were still in touch almost a year after filming.

Hurl! (USA, 2008)

What is it?A US TV Gameshow in which contestants alternate between eating and extreme exercise in order to see who will be the last to throw up. The winner gets $1000. The first round involves eating as much as possible in 5 minutes (only the 3 that eat the most make it through to Round 2). Round 2 then involves physical activity for 5 minutes. For the 3rd round, there is 4 more minutes of eating and the 4th round involves more exercise.

Highlights:Personally, I'd rather not watch people throw up on TV. I imagine watching them eat that much would be kind of fun and for the sake of the show, I'd probably join in with that part at home. I want nothing to do with the rest of it, though.

Fun Facts: If the rounds keep going on and 2 contestants are left, they must engage in a 'Sudden Barf' round in which the activities are done blindfolded. There is a Klaxon, a pinball sound effect and numbered buckets to indicate how much the contestant hurled throughout the show, also. Classy, guys.

Sperm Race (Germany, 2005)

What is it?

In 2005, 12 contestants (including 2 celebrities) donated sperm to a clinic. The sperm was then sent over to a TV studio and released into test tubes simultaneously. The winner was the man whose sperm first reached a chemical substance identical to that which is emitted from a womb. What did they get out of it, you ask? Why do this, you ask? Well, the winner got a Porsche.

Highlights: I can't imagine this would be a very exciting show, but I guess the Science would be interesting. It was stated that the cameras did not follow the men whilst they.... made their contribution, thank goodness.

Fun Facts: Apparently the show was piloted but never actually aired. Sperm Race was also supposedly a serious scientific programme as fertility was a hot topic in Germany at the time.

Sokkuri Sweets (Japan, 2014)

What is it?Contestants bite into things in the hope that they are made of sokkuri sweets or cake. Sometimes though, it's just a shoe/picture frame/door handle. That is literally it. I'm not even sure that they win anything.

Highlights:It's just absurd enough to be entertaining. There's quite a few clips around and it's strangely satisfying to see somebody bite into a shoe and then... chew it because it's cake. Maybe I've been working on this list for too long.

Fun Facts:Sokkuri means 'lookalike' so the title is 'lookalike sweets'. The show does what it says on the tin.

There are a few other disturbing, bizarre, explicit and disgusting examples that I've found on my strange line of research but I've kept the list as tame as possible. I can come to only one conclusion: the world is pretty much doomed but it sure is weirdly entertaining.

Now lets all pour one out for Keith Chegwin's dignity.
