Friends - The One With The Inconsistencies

Today's post has been equally fun and infuriating.

In January 2018, Netflix UK dropped all 10 seasons of the cult TV show Friends and I know that lots of us instantly got our binge faces on. Is it the 1000th time I've binged it? Yes. Am I sorry? Definitely not.

For many years there have been some inconsistencies in Friends that have drove me crazy and the binging opportunity meant that even more cropped up - so I'm here to be petty and point them out. There are a lot of others that I haven't included but leave a comment if you've noticed any others too!

Phoebe's French

Okay so Queen of strange talents and knowledge, Miss Phoebe Buffay, reveals in The One Where Joey Speaks French (Season 10) that of course, she can speak French fluently (especially fluent enough to teach it to somebody). However, in The One With Rachel's Date (Season 8), Phoebe apparently has no idea what the word 'sous' means. How could she be fluent in French and still think that Tim (Monica's sous chef) is her boss? C'est un mystère!

The Multiple Birthdays

It must be really expensive to be part of the Friends gang because Ross especially seems to have multiple birthdays.

Lets recap: . In The One Where Emma Cries (Season 9) Ross claims that his birthday is on October 18th. This seems to be backed up by the Hootie and the Blowfish concert that the Friends attend for Ross' birthday, again in October. . However, in The One With George Stephanopoulos (Season 1), when presented with Rangers tickets in October, Ross claims that his birthday was 7 months ago - which would mean he was born in March. . Lastly, in The One With Joey's New Girlfriend (Season 4), Gunther asks for Rachel's birthday as he's 'taking a list' and Ross then tells him that his birthday is in December?!

To add insult to injury, Rachel then answers that her birthday is in May despite her ID showing that she is an Aquarius in The One With Chandler's Dad (Season 7).

Ross also manages to stay 29 for seasons 3, 4 and 5 despite various Thanksgivings and Christmases passing by... okay, Peter Pan.

Changing Door Numbers

In the first few episodes of Season 1, Monica lives at number 5 with Joey and Chandler living across the hall at number 4. The producers soon clocked on that these low numbers didn't make sense for an apartment at least a few floors up and so, the numbers both changed to 19 and 20.

Rachel and Chandler's Amnesia

This is a very strange one. So Rachel and Chandler actually met at least 4 times before Episode 1. Let's list:

. At the College party in which Chandler kissed Rachel (and Ross thought he did too but actually kissed his sister. Nasty.) . At Thanksgiving (the one where Monica accidentally cut off Chandler's toe)

. In The One With The Flashback, we see that Rachel and Chandler were also introduced once again in the coffee house. Rachel even fantasises about sleeping with Chandler to 'get it out of her system' before marrying Barry. . Other Thanksgivings which have been mentioned throughout the seasons.

And YET when Rachel walks into the coffee house in her wedding dress in the pilot - they are introduced as strangers and they do not acknowledge ever having met before. I'm fairly certain that you would remember either having your foot maimed or being present when somebody's foot is maimed - or is that just me?

Barry Whats-His-Face

Remember Barry, the slimeball Dentist that Rachel nearly married?

Yeah, him. His last name on the show was always Farber minus one exception - the pilot. In the pilot episode, Rachel says that she ran out on a guy named 'Finkel'.

Maybe he was hiding from the law?

Ross' Ice Cream Debacle

In The One Where Chandler Doesn't Like Dogs (Season 7), Ross admits the worst confession behind somebody not liking dogs - he supposedly doesn't like ice cream.

Well, busted Ross - you've been caught eating ice-cream both with student Elizabeth and with Marcel the monkey. I imagine Marcel was better company.

Just How Useless Was Phoebe's Dad?

Friends fans were led to believe in Season 2 that Phoebe's Father left before she was born. However, upon finally meeting her real Father in The One With Joey's Bag (Season 5), she learns that he was around quite a bit before he skipped town on her. Enough to sing songs to her that would inspire her best hit, Smelly Cat, at least (she must have been minimum of a toddler to remember the tune). He said that he put diapers on her and made formula for her... so she definitely was born when he left.

Ross' Sexscapades

In The One With George Stephanopoulos (Season 1), Ross confesses to Chandler and Joey that Carol is the only woman he has slept with. However, it is later revealed in Season 7 that he slept with the College cleaning lady.

Why are you selling yourself short, Ross?

What You Talkin' Bout, Willis?

This one is obviously understandable but it really does tickle me.

Ross, Chandler and Joey continually express their love for the movie Die Hard and yet they don't recognise that Elizabeth's Father is Bruce Willis? Do they even think that the two look similar? I feel like that would have a been an opportunity that the writer's missed.

Maybe Friends and Die Hard should have had a crossover movie...

So that's my list of inconsistencies! Thanks for reading and I hope you find these things as irritating and satisfying as I do.

Happy hunting, folks!
